About us

The Social Investment Agency (SIA), launched on 1 July 2017, is responsible for overseeing and coordinating government’s approach to social investment. The SIA works with agencies and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), to help them take a life-time view of service users.

Innovation is a key feature of the SIA’s mandate and will build on the Social Investment Unit and Social Sector Strategy’s work to help social sector agencies deliver the right services to New Zealanders in need, at the time it will help them the most.

Our functions

  • Developing the architecture to assist agencies (and others) to apply social investment.
  • Providing advice on investment priorities for government and monitor selected investments over time.
  • Trialling and testing new approaches for targeted populations.
  • Assessing progress and maturity of social investment and its practice across the social sector.

Our mandate

While agencies will have responsibility for implementing social investment, the SIA’s mandate includes:

  • Building architecture to support agencies to apply social investment
  • Developing whole-of-system advice
  • Trialling and testing new approaches.
