Official Information Act (OIA) requests

The Official Information Act 1982 (the OIA) allows government information (official information) to be requested and made available unless there is a good reason to withhold it. Official information can include documents, reports, electronic files and manuals, emails and letters.

Making a request for information

If you would like to make a request, it should be as clear and specific as you can possibly make it.  You can email us at info@sia.govt.nz or write to us: Level 3, 117 Lambton Quay, Wellington 6011 or PO Box 639, Wellington 6140.

Please include: your full name, a contact phone number (daytime), a contact address (email & postal) and details of the information you want. We may ask you for more details to clarify your request.

Before requesting official information, we encourage you to check out the information on our website. You may find the detail you need is already publicly available.

How long will it take to process my request?

The OIA requires a decision on your request to be made within 20 working days of receiving your request. Depending on the nature of your request, this timeframe may be shorter or it may need to be extended. You will be notified if an extension to the timeframe is made.

Can information be withheld or refused?

Requests can be refused or information withheld, but only if a good reason exists under the OIA for not providing the information. We will inform you of the reason for the refusal or why it is withheld.

Making a complaint

Contact us, we would like to work together to resolve your concerns.

You can make a complaint to the Office of the Ombudsman if you have concerns regarding the decision we made on your request; or are unhappy about the way your request was treated or processed.

These concerns can relate to the withholding of information, extending the timeframe to respond to you, any charges for providing the information you have requested, delays in providing you with a decision or the information.

The Office of the Ombudsman(external link) can investigate and review a decision and may make a recommendation to the agency if it is considered appropriate.
